Cookies and browser storage
Cookies are small pieces of text that a website asks your browser to keep and send back on later visits. Browsers also have local storage and session storage, which a page’s own scripts read. Session storage is deleted when you close the tab. Local storage stays until it’s cleared.
This policy covers this website, bonasecure.co.za and bonasecure.co.uk, including its pages in Japanese, Thai and Kiswahili. What the Bona product keeps in browsers is further down.
What this website keeps on your device
This is everything this website stores in your browser. Google Analytics’ cookies are set only where Google Analytics may run, as described under “When we ask first” below. They are first-party cookies: they belong to this website’s own address, not to Google’s.
| Name | What it’s for | Type | Set by | How long |
|---|---|---|---|---|
_ga |
Google Analytics: a random identifier that tells one browser’s visits apart, so we can count visitors rather than page loads. | Cookie | 2 years from your last visit | |
_ga_P8JS5XRQ2N |
Google Analytics: keeps track of your current visit, for the same counts. | Cookie | 2 years from your last visit | |
bona.consent |
Your cookie choice, Accept or Reject, and when you made it. | Local storage | Bona | 1 year, then we ask again |
bona.attribution |
How you found this website: the site that linked to it, any campaign tags in the link, the page you landed on and when. It’s sent to us only with the contact form, and kept only where Google Analytics may run. | Local storage | Bona | Up to 30 days |
bona.loc |
The country your connection comes from, as Cloudflare sees it, so that prices, the regional view of the site and the cookie question fit where you are. | Session storage | Bona | Until you close the tab |
bona.currency |
The currency you picked with a “Prices in” switch. Kept only if you pick one. | Local storage | Bona | Until you clear it |
bona.lang |
The language you picked in the language menu, or that you chose to stay in English. Kept only if you pick one. | Local storage | Bona | Until you clear it |
We use no advertising cookies. Google Analytics’ advertising features and Google signals are switched off, so what it collects isn’t used for ads. Google keeps what it collects about individual visitors for 2 months. What Google Analytics sends to Google, and why, is listed in our privacy policy.
When we ask first
- Visitors in the UK, the EU, the EEA, Switzerland, Thailand and Kenya are asked first. Until you click Accept, Google Analytics doesn’t load, its cookies aren’t set, nothing is sent to Google and the record of how you found this website isn’t kept. We also ask when we can’t tell where you are.
- Everywhere else, including South Africa and Japan, Google Analytics runs without asking, on the basis of our legitimate interest in making this website clearer. You can still turn it off with the button below.
- To know where you are, this website asks Cloudflare, once per tab, which country your connection comes from. It keeps only the country, in
bona.loc. - Your choice is kept in your browser for a year, and holds wherever you are. If you say no, we also delete Google Analytics’ cookies and the record of how you found this website.
Other services on this website
- Cloudflare hosts this website. Its Web Analytics counts page views without cookies and without storing anything on your device. Cloudflare sets a cookie only when its bot protection or a security check runs:
__cf_bmhelps it tell people from bots and expires after 30 minutes without activity, andcf_clearanceremembers that you passed a security check. They are needed to reach the site, so we don’t ask first. - Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a person, not a bot, is sending our contact form and our data request form. Cloudflare says Turnstile processes only the data strictly needed for that, such as your IP address and browser details, and doesn’t access, store or send what you type into the form. Cloudflare uses this data only to detect and block bots and to improve that detection, not to identify or profile you. Its Turnstile privacy addendum has the details.
- Google Fonts provides this website’s fonts. It sets no cookies.
- Links in our emails go through bonasecure.co.za/go/ or bonasecure.co.uk/go/ and set no cookies. Our privacy policy says what a click records.
The Bona product
Businesses add Bona to their own websites. This is what it keeps in browsers:
- The widget on a business’s website sets no cookies and uses no local storage. It keeps a few things in that tab’s session storage, which the browser deletes when the tab closes: the live session, so that it carries on as the customer moves between pages; where the visitor came from, which is sent only if they start a chat or share their screen; and choices made in the chat, such as whether its panel is open.
- The dashboard (app.bonasecure.co.za) sets one cookie when you sign in, named
__Host-cb_s, to keep you signed in. It lasts up to 7 days, stops working after 24 hours without use, and is deleted when you sign out. Bona can’t work without it, so we don’t ask first. - The agent console (console.bonasecure.co.za) sets no cookies. It keeps the agent’s sign-in in session storage, which is deleted when the tab closes, and remembers the agent’s display name, alert settings and queue filters in local storage. If an agent turns notifications on, their browser also keeps a subscription so that we can tell them when a customer is waiting.
Each business that uses Bona is responsible for the cookie notice on its own website.
How to change your mind or delete them
- On this website: use the button below to see the cookie question again and change your answer.
- In your browser: you can block or delete cookies and other site data in your browser’s settings. Deleting the site data for bonasecure.co.za or bonasecure.co.uk removes everything in the table above. This website still works without it. Where we ask first, we’ll ask again.
- Google’s opt-out: Google’s opt-out add-on stops Google Analytics on every website you visit.
- Private windows: a private or incognito window deletes what it stored when you close it.
